Argentina’s overseas fruit exports decreased by 25%

Argentina’s exports of pears and apples to overseas markets in the first three months of the year amounted to just over 90,000 tons, i.e. nearly 25% less than in the same period of 2018.

The scenario is really worrying considering that there were positive expectations among companies, prior to the imposition by the national government of export duties (withholdings).

Pear shipments in this first quarter amounted to 80,400 tons, 22% less than in the same period of 2018. Apple sales totaled 9,570 tons, nearly 40% less than in the same period of last year.

The data was prepared by the Patagonia Norte port terminal and reflects the output of the fruit of the valley through the ports of San Antonio and Bahia Blanca, which concentrate more than 80% of the exportable supply overseas. Most of the entrepreneurs linked to the sector coincide in pointing out that the effects of withholdings on exports have been decisive in the deterioration of regional exports. In addition, the delay in the pear harvest led to a delay in shipments to European markets and the fruit’s health also affected exports.

The first projections, which were made towards the end of December, indicated that the region would have a greater harvest of pears and apples, which would have a favorable effect on export levels. However, none of this is happening. Although the second quarter will end up defining the season.

84,000 tons of fruit were exported through the port of San Antonio in the first three months, the lowest volume of the last 25 years.
