Europe’s onion shortage presents opportunities for Argentina
Onion production in Europe has producers on the verge of tears, and producers from Argentina smiling.
According to agronomist Daniel Iurman, of the Experimental Agricultural Station (EEA) Hilario Ascasubi del Inta, onion production in the center and north of Europe decreased by 16 percent due to high temperatures and a water deficit, which could lead to an increase in exports from Argentina.
Iurman stated this during the 12th Onion Festival in Hilario Ascasubi, south of Buenos Aires, one of the main producing areas of the country.
The lower European supply has led to an increase in the price of onions originating in that continent, which places the local onion in a better position to reach Brazil, which last year imported more from Europe than from Argentina.
In addition, some productive regions of southern Brazil suffered a reduction in production due to some mildew (a disease that attacks the stem and leaves of the plant) issues in crops.
The supply deficit calculated for the months of April and May is over 100 thousand tons, a moment in which Argentina’s production can obtain good prices. Therefore, the commercial flow is quite active these days.
