$4.6M in mandarin exports from Georgia already this season

The current export volume of Georgian mandarin as of December 6, 2020, equaled 9,476 tons and amounted to $4.6 million according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

The Ministry of Finance of Georgia stated that Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Slovenia, and several other countries are among the export markets for Georgian mandarins.

Organized export of mandarins from Georgia began in November, although small consignments of early varieties of mandarins have been exported since August. Adjara is the main supplier of Georgian mandarins to the market and approximately 30 enterprises are involved in receiving mandarins from farmers to prepare them for export this year.

A coordination headquarters, which includes representatives from a number of government agencies, has been operating since mid-October to efficiently and systematically facilitate the delivery of citrus fruits by farmers in the Kobuleti region of Adjara. The headquarters will continue to work until February 1, 2021.

Today, the minimum cost of mandarins in the markets of the country, depending on the variety and quality, is 0.6 lari ($0.2) and the maximum is 1.5 lari ($0.5).

Official forecasts for the mandarin harvest this season in Georgia is expected to be about 40,000 tons. This total would be one third less than in the past due to the frequency of fruiting (characteristic of orchards) as well as unfavorable weather conditions in February.

The volume of mandarin exports in the period from September 2019 to March 2020 in monetary terms amounted to $20.2 million according to the National Statistics Service of Georgia. Over 30,000 tons were exported during this period. More than 60% of export deliveries were made to Russia and the three other leading export markets for Georgian mandarins include Ukraine and Armenia.
