Italy is the leading global producer of organic citrus fruit
With almost 40 thousand hectares, Italy is the leading global producer of organic citrus fruit – it is quite an impressive figure if you think that Mexico, a much larger country, occupies the second place with only 12,570 hectares destined to this segment. In general, Italy is one of the leading growers of organic food in the world, a market that is worth almost $100 billion.
As shown in the chart above, around 45% of the entire global citrus fruit production (cultivated hectares) is in Italy, followed by Mexico with 14.31% and Spain with 13.77%. Despite the larger areas destined to agriculture, organic tangerine and orange cultivation in countries like the US and China do not exceed 5 thousand hectares.
The global production of citrus fruit without adding chemicals has doubled over the past ten years. In 2007, there were 43,399 hectares destined to tangerines and oranges globally while 87,810 hectares were reached in 2017.
